The legendary American “King of Diamonds” – the greatest gemstone and diamond dealer in the world, who also designs and manufactures jewellery himself – is even referenced by Marilyn Monroe in her immortal song. Harry Winston remains to this day the measure of all things when it comes to precious jewellery and luxury timepieces.
By the age of 12, Harry Winston was already walking in the footsteps of his father, a man of Ukrainian heritage who operated as a gemstone dealer in California. His steeply climbing career begins with the acquisition of the famous Huntington jewellery collection, which he reworked and modernised. He revolutionises jewellery design in the 1920s with his flexible, delicate, woven platinum settings that lend a characteristically new shine to the gemstones. In all his creations is the guiding philosophy that the individual gemstone dictates the design of the jewellery – not the metal setting. In 1932 he opens his New York store under the motto „Rare jewels of the world“. He owns many of the world’s most famous diamonds, some of which he donates to museums in the 1950s. As the consummate expert, he buys and sells gemstones and jewellery for Elizabeth Taylor and the Duchess of Windsor. His jewels are adored for their quality of stones and minimalistic settings. Following his death in 1978, his son Ronald takes over the business. The Swiss Swatch Group acquires Harry Winston’s business in 2013.

Harry Winston tritt schon als 12-Jähriger in die Fußstapfen des aus der Ukraine stammenden Vaters, der einen kleinen Edelsteinhandel in Kalifornien betreibt. Seine steile Karriere beginnt mit dem Ankauf der berühmten Huntington Schmucksammlung, die er überarbeitet und modernisiert. Er revolutioniert in den 1920er Jahren den Schmuckstil mit seinen flexiblen, feinen, gewobenen Platinfassungen, die die Edelsteine in neuem Glanz erscheinen lassen. Er vertritt bei all seinen Kreationen die Philosophie, dass der einzelne Edelstein die Gestaltung des Schmuckes diktiert und nicht die Metallfassung. 1932 eröffnet er sein Geschäft in New York unter dem Motto „Seltene Juwelen aus aller Welt“. Er besitzt viele der berühmtesten Diamanten der Welt, von denen er in den 1950er Jahren einige an Museen stiftet. Als der Experte kauft und verkauft er Steine und Schmuck für Elizabeth Taylor und die Herzogin von Windsor. Seine Juwelen sind für ihre qualitätvollen Steine und minimalistischen Fassungen beliebt. Nach seinem Tod 1978 übernimmt sein Sohn Ronald das Unternehmen. 2013 kauft die Schweizer Swatch Gruppe Harry Winstons Unternehmen.
